Only for the profit.
Companies couldn't care less about environmental issues because they are a non-accounting asset/liability. That is why they spend such terrific amounts of money to make people think that global warming is either nonexistent or just an phenomena of nature.

Perhaps it has something to do with the fact that virtually everybody has a vehicle that burns a fossil fuel.

Because most people use gasoline. It wouldn't make much sense as a promotion to give away other types of fuel.
