Sorry I'm a spelling freak, it is "wear" not "where".
Our police service purchases and issues our body armour. We cannot wear any other kind of vest unless it has been approved by administration. If you get shot wearing a non-approved vest you may not be covered for your injuries by the police service and may not be eligible for workers compensation (or survivor benefits if you don't make it).
The vests are bullet resistant, by the way, not bullet proof.

Wow, we understand that you have this weird hatred of cops. Or maybe just a strange fetish for people in blue uniforms. Anyway, it's not illegal to wear a bulletproof vest, but it's weird.

It will vary from department to department. My department doesn't issue vests (don't get me started on that one), its up to us to get one on our own, if we choose to. Some departments will probably issue you a vest and require you to wear what they issue. But if you have to get your own, they are broken down into Level 2A, Level 2, and Level 3A. The level is determined by how big/powerful of a round they can stop. The general rule is, get one that is rated to stop the round you carry. If you carry a .45, get a vest that can stop a .45.

Depends on their department policy. Some depts. will let their officers wear their own vests as long as they have one on. Where I work it's mandatory.

Depending on the agency. We are issued a IIA level vests, but I bought my own IIIA level vest and wear it regularly. I prefer safety over departmental budget constraints.
**ADDED**
I had to have it approved/inspected first. Just like choosing your own duty weapon (not allowed that, though)

Yes, some can, but you have to conform to the departmental manditory threat level rating for the vest you buy.

Some departments want you to only wear department issued gear, they think it makes them less liable.
Other departments give you a gear allowance and let you pick out what you want within certain parameters.

the vests are fitted for each officer. why is that question a real question? civilians can't pick them out and wear them. It would be impersonating a police officer.

They should have some sort of policies and procedues manual. Some agencies have it in their union contract if they belong to one. You usually can purchase your own if it meets their standards.
