1. Call the owner immediately to advise them of what happened.
2. Tell the owner that the experience was distressing and that you have concerns that this will happen again. [you may find out that the biter has done it before and that would change the scenario]
3. Tell the owner that you will have to separate the dogs for safety not only of attacked dog but also relieve your anxiety about the situation. Tell the owner how cold it is outside and ask if they would prefer you got back to the vet for advice on medicating/boarding the dog or just call a boarding kennel?
Something doesn't seem right to me, maybe one dog is aggressive and without the "master" to keep it in line it may be showing its true colours or perhaps there is something else going on with the dogs to make one them behave in that manner in any case I do feel that the situation should be discussed further with the vet to try to get to the cause of the problem and prevent it happening again.

Do you have another person around, or are you alone? If you're alone, dragging one dog off by the hind legs will just give the other dog the ideal chance to attack her defenseless adversary. Yelling just encourages them and makes it worse. I've never found water made any difference. And if you get your hands or body in between trying to break them up, you'll likely get bitten (unintentionally, of course, but that's of little comfort when it happens). The only way I know of to separate 2 dogs who are seriously fighting when you have no assistant, is to attach a strong leash (chain or not easily chewed) to whichever one you can and tie the end to a sturdy object. Then get a leash on the other one. Might take some fancy footwork on your part, just be careful you don't get bitten. Then wait your chance for a momentary separation as they both seek a better hold (this can take some time, though), then YANK the dogs apart and drag one into the house or another room. And yes, you might have to re-home one of them. What breed(s) are they? Are they spayed?

Sounds like you have taken care of the emergency situation well. Now its time to call the owner. If the dogs are used to being inside put them in seperate rooms until you can get in touch with the owner. You can't leave them out in the cold for too long.

If you can not locate the owner, then I would board the dog either at the vet or at a kennel until you can get in contact with them.

Good Luck

No matter what, please do not leave either one of the dogs outside in this bitterly cold weather. Keep them in separate rooms, but outside is definitely not an option as the cold could kill them.

I agree that boarding is a good option for the dog that did the attacking, and most vets board dogs but if they don't, they can recommend someone. Be sure to call your boss. If my dog was injured and my sitter didn't call me, I would be furious. If money is an issue, I am sure that your boss will pay you back for the boarding bill. Good luck.

Your solution is very simple. Like someone had already said here, get dog crates. You don't need muzzles. Keep the crates inside the house, and leave one dog in the crate, and the other to run free and vice versa. The dog is not stressed, it is pack/rivalry issues. It is not cruel to leave a dog in a crate for a while. If you're having problems with getting a dog into the crate, get a piece of good food that the dog will like (a piece of hot dog) and toss it inside the crate. Once he is inside, close the crate and you're done.

Board the dog at the vet, or somewhere else. Charge it to the owners. Call them immediately, if possible, but don't bring both dogs back into the house.

Call the owners and keep a water spray bottle available at all times. If the dogs get in another fight, spray water on them and it will stop the fight.

Put the one that did the attacking in a boarding kennel. Tell your boss that you don't trust the dog after it attacked the other dog and that you don't feel safe with it in the house.

Put one of them in a kennel and spend the next few hours updating your resume. If the dog dies, it'll be time to look for a new job...

Get a gate, or crates but keep them apart. Might even consider a muzzle for both dogs. Remind me not to ask you to babysit for me.
