Don't buy a dog for protection.. Dogs are for you to protect. If you need protection, buy a security system, a security camera, and maybe a baseball bat. Protect the dog, buy a protection system.

German Shepherds....mine is 13 weeks old and is barking at the doorbell and strangers...mind you I have a poodle mix who knows when a piece of grass moves in our driveway. Also mine master the sounds of our cars....if it doesn't sound like ours...he barks. There are different type of watch dogs.....

Family/house protection-if properly trained, will guard and intruder until someone returns.

Personal Protection level one-will bark agressivly at the end of the leash when givin his command. Will bite if provoked.

Personal Protection 2- will attack when asked, with a recall command usually OUT.

Personal protection 3- will do what level 1 and 2 are trained to do. If the suspect is running and still a threat, the dog can be sent out and released from a distance.

Guard Dogs- generally outside dogs for junkyards or buisnesses, give warnign barks

Sentry Dogs- Are extremly dangerous, are trained to ATTACK anybody that enters the property except the owner.

Regardless of what he would be used for, get a professional to train him with you.

Most owners choose to train Protection dogs in either French or German, as the dog learns when a certain language is used....it is his on switch...Just like police dogs.

Doo some researching you'll be surprised what you come up with.

Any dog that has a voice. That is it in a nutshell. If you want a guard dog, please go and adopt a dog from the Humane Society or your local animal shelter. The best guard dog is an alert watch dog. A dog who will bark when people enter your house is by far the best defense against unwanted intruders.

Common Mistakes

The Bigger The Dog, The More Protective
False. Absolutely false. Size makes no difference whatsoever. Your dog absorbs everything into his personality, in other words, your dog is what you make him. A dog who is well-loved, will grow to be a loving and stable family pet, regardless of size, who is willing to do everything to keep you happy. A dog who is neglected, abused, or otherwise mishandled, will grow into an unstable, hazardous animal, who might turn out to be the need for protection, rather than the protection you are looking for.

If I Want A Dog For Home Protection, I Should Look For Someone Who Breeds Mean Dogs
Whoa! No, no, no, and NO! Breeding for a mean temperament is the first sign you should be looking elsewhere. A dog with a nasty temperament quickly becomes a liability on you, as a homeowner and dog owner, and a danger to everyone he comes into contact with. What you need, is a dog with a steady, stable temperament. You need a dog who responds well to interaction, and is eager to please.

I Only Want A Dog For Home Protection
This is the biggest mistake of them all. Do you want a dog as a loving member of the family, or do you want a dog just to keep intruders out? Dogs are so much more than a barking machine. Dogs come with health care costs, feeding costs, and time investments. If all you want is something to keep your home safe, please, put down that phone, forget about calling your local humane society. Instead, please pick up the phone book and look for a home security place near you that sells burglar alarms. They work out to be much cheaper in the long run, less time consuming, and above all, won't get you sued when your poorly trained dog bites the meter reader.

Dobermans are fairly protective as noted above. German Shepherds are among the smartest and as the name indicates, were originally used in herding sheep--very protective but this sometimes translates (as it does with other protective dogs) into corrective (but non-injurious) nipping if authority is not established.

If you want one because of a specific threat, professional training is probably of value. If you are interested in one simply to have a more secure home in an area known for burglars, a large dog such as a Rottweiler or even the more playful retrievers may be sufficient.

Depends on how protected you want to be. Some breeds are watch dogs (which means they are good at warning you, but may not attack) and some are guard dogs (which will attack). Great Danes are excellent watch dogs. They will bark, and their bark is loud and deep enough to deter most people from messing with you/your property. However, they must really feel that you are being threatened (ie they need to see you being attacked) to provoke them to attack. My Great Danes used to run their mouths a lot, but when it came down to it, they would run and hide like big babies. Guard dogs would be German Shepards, Dobermans, Rotts, and Pits as a few examples.

Smith and Wesson.

That's really funny, Junie. I didn't see your answer when I posted mine.

But yeah, Smith and Wesson.

Pretty much having a barking dog on your side of the door deters criminals. They want to go where they can get in and out quickly and quietly, and dogs don't let the quietly part happen.

German Shepards, and Dobermins. Rotts are very sweet dogs and I have one that I would not recommend for protection shes a big baby lol. But German Shepards are great family dogs, and guard dogs.

I had a wolf, german shepard cross breed that was fantastic for protection and incredibly smart too. But they are hard to handle.

He was also a great friend and companion.
