Ping, Callaway, Mizuno, TaylorMade, Cleveland. You can't go wrong with any of these manufacturers. I recommend you find a golf specialty store so that they can help you find the best set for his game. Each of these brands offer various models for level of play.

the leading club manufacturers are. titleist, callaway, taylormade, nike, ping and mizuno.
there are several other decent brands like cleveland but these are the ones played by the majority of tour pro's and amateurs.
the problem with buying a set of clubs as a surprise is that its all down to personnel choice as you can see from the answers.some people for example find a brand they like and will only buy their clubs.a friend of mine will only buy callaway and doesnt even try anything else even though other clubs may be better suited!!.
the best way to go about it is to take your boyfriend to the range to try some out.i went to buy some taylor made irons but after trying several ones out found the ping g5 suited my game best.also the irons you buy need to be custon fitted.everyone player is a different height and size and the clubs should be fitted to the individual.
if you really want to buy them however any good firm like american golf will offer a full refund or exchange on any clubs.
so go for the latest from the above for example and once hes had them before they get scratched take them to the shop for a try and fitting.most shops either have a range or a custom fit room linked to a computer hell have great fun so you get some more brownie points.hope this helps hes a lucky boy and hed better get you a big bunch of flowers!!

Titleist and Mizuno are your best bet for tough to hit (players') rons. Callaway, Ping, Callaway, and Taylormade make good oversized irons. Callaway, Cleveland and Nike ar good for oversized drivers. Cleveland, Titleist, and Taylor Made have good wedges. Putters are another issue. It depends on what type of style he likes, a belly putter or a standard, a mallet or a blade, a heavy or lighter putter.

Callaways and Taylor Mades are good but they're on the pricey side. (500-1000)If you want no name brands that are cheap, go to your local big 5 or sportsmart. They should go anywhere from 200 to 300
