This reference is from the King James, where Paul states that Christ was being made a curse for us: for it is written, cursed is everyone that hangeth on a tree.
He was quoting from Deuteronomy 21: 22,23 --- long before Jesus walked the earth.

Oates: Paul the Apostle, being educated in the strict Sanhedrin discipline of the Jewish Pharisaical Scholars of his time, was relating to the Old Testament (Deut 21: 22 & 23) prophesy of Jesus' death, as he cited from the Galatical epistle (Gal 3:13). When Jesus was made to carry His cross of wood just after His beating and torture, obviously, it wasn't a tree He was forced to carry - but an implement (cross) made from the substance of a tree (wood) .

Because a cross is made from wood just like a tree. Jesus was hanging from it. He couldnt be hung from a tree, because in a hanging, typically the neck is broken. And it says that no bone shall be broken.

"Tree" became a generic term for any death by hanging, whether it be hanging (by the neck), impalement, or crucifixion.
It's like asking "Which is correct, scaffold or gallows?" Either name will do.
