To become a good golfer doesn't have to do with time it has to do with your dedication to practice. The more time you take to practice on the range with your various clubs. Then of course there is the chipping and most importantly the putting is the most of all games. Ever heard the saying drive for show put for dough. When practicing on the range don't just hit the same club for a bucket of balls mix it up. For example hit 5 balls with the 7 iron and 5 balls with the 9 then maybe move to the driver and then chose something else. You must remember though the most important thing in golf is the driving chipping and very much so the putting. Become a really good putter and you have the game half licked.

The easiest way to learn golf like a pro is by following "The Simple Golf Swing" program. It's primarily a 31 page eBook that teaches golfers how to make solid contact with the ball, how to avoid hitting fat, how to avoid slicing, how get more power, accuracy, and consistency in your swing. Consistency being the number 1 golf skill.
You not only get the eBook though, you also receive a ton of extra material including video, lessons on putting, driving, chipping, sand play etc. Here is their official site: http://www.golfswingguru.net

I'm 40 and started golfing at about 15. I am still not good, so clearly it takes more than 25 years.

Depends how fast you learn...and if your athletically inclined.
I started in my late 20's and I am now 38. I am now a good golfer...I have a 10 handicap, but I golf everyday in the summer, and I work really hard at getting better.
If you start golfing, I Hope you enjoy it as much as I do!!

It depends. If you take lots of lessons and hit lots of range balls, you can become decent in about 6 months. To get really good, you need to work at it for years or have incredible hand eye coordination and a natural swing.

How many hours a day, days a week, weeks per month, and months per year are you willing to put in? As with most things in life, you get out of it what you put into it.
Practice being perfect makes perfect. Practice being mediocre make mediocre.
So, how do you get to Carnegie Hall? Practice, practice, practice.
To answer you question, only YOU can answer it! :-)

A lifetime.....and then some, as good is completely relative. Ask Tiger if he's as good as he wants to be, he'll laugh. An amateur will practice until he gets it right. A pro will practice until he can't get it wrong.
