I have a cat flap that allows my cat to come in and out as he pleases. Recently I think a neighbour's cat is attempting to come in, or has been in my house and is upsetting my cat. Locking the cat door is not an option as my cat gets very nasty when trapped inside all day. Any suggestions??

the best thing to do its to let your neighbour know, and try to work something out, or you can train your cat to go out a particular times of the day, so you can minimise the chance of the other cats to come into your house

that is what you have to expect from not locking the pet flap on your door. question you should be asking is there "something" else coming in. you assume a cat, but possums, rats and even small dogs can use those if not locked. as for your cat, i know all cats have God complexes, i have four....all little queens. but you either put up with her nasty mood and act like the adult or risk your cat getting bothered and or hurt by the neighbor cat or "something" else. GOOD LUCK!

Locking your cat door IS an option. Your cat doesn't control you.

Outdoor cats have a considerably shorter life expectancy than indoor cats, for obvious reasons. Allowing your cat to roam outdoors whenever and wherever it wants is just asking for trouble.

Get rid of the cat flap and keep your cat inside.

Just think of it this way, someone elses cat is coming into your home and you don't like it. But, you let your cat roam and do the same annoying things to your neighbors.

There are many dangers out there for loose animals including cars, other animals, people that don't care for cats, etc.

Please protect your cat and keep it inside.

We had this problem and after numerous attempts to stop them coming in found the only way was to be a little bit nasty!! We were told to fill a little spray bottle with some water and when we catch the cats inside our home, give them a quick squirt - not enough to soak them - but enough to stop them coming in again for another!!! It won't harm them at all - but it puts them off coming in!!

Doctors Foster and Smith sells an infrared collar and door that automatically opens the cat door when your cat approaches it, so that no other animal can.
Go to the link below and take a look.

They sell cat flaps that unlock only when a cat that is wearing a radio collar is near it. It will not open in the absence of the special collar, which only your cat would be wearing. Check the web.

You might get a spray bottle of water and spray the neighbor's cat when he comes through the cat flap. He'll realize that coming to your house is an unpleasant experience, and hopefully he'll stop. I wouldn't keep your cat inside. I disagree with other posters who say it's too dangerous for cats to be outside. Wild cats and feral domestic cats manage just fine. I think it's healthy for a cat to be outside. That way they can hunt, which is their natural instince to do.

I would suggest keeping your cat inside for it would be safer, healthier and you will have less vet bills to pay. Letting your cat roam in the street is not a good idea. There are too many dangers outside and neighbors that will gladly abuse or kill your cat cause they are tired of it getting on their precious car or pooping in their garden.
If you don't like that idea, then build an enclosure for it. That will solve all your problems.

Talk to your neighbor if they wont do anything call animal control, or if you can get another door get one where the cat has to wear the collar to have the door open up.
