This sounds really weird, but vinegar will soften your skin . Dilute some apple cider vinegar with a little water and apply. It doesn't smell great, but follow it up with some honey and it will.
Honey works really well, and it smells yummy. Honey also has natural antibacterial properties too. Just apply after washing and leave it on as long as you want to. Rinse it off, and your skin feels really soft.
This is stuff you probably have in the house already, so give it a try. I have seven cats, and I sympathize with you about your poor kitty. Good luck to you.

First clean and exfoliate the skin...a plastic shower sponge will do a good enough job of remoing the dead cells and flakes that make it show most...then try one of the following:
Baby oil.
Olive oil.
Dollar-store lotion with Collagen (water based, NO alchohol)
There are also a few other items that may be lying around the house that can offer some relief, such as;
a 50-50 mix of water and conditioner (alchohol-free,of course) can be rubbed into the skin for a nice overnight treatment...but rinse it off in the morning.
Cuccumber juice...apply a slice to the eyes for1-2 hours at night...helps with the tightness around the eyes.
Mayonaise...Many women use this as a facial mask for conditioning of the skin (contains simply eggs and oil)
...speaking of eggs; Eggwhites are also used as a mask treatment, applied directly from a bowl with cottonballs.
Let dry, and rinse with warm water...and a dab of fine oil afterwards will keep the moisture locked in longer.
Milk...Has many women convinced of it's soothing properties, though I have no personal experience with it...used as both a soothing application, and as a steam mask (place a small towel in a bowl of milk, wring out gently, and place in the microwave for 30 secs...apply to face for 15 minutes.)
The key is to apply moisture, preferable moisture that will remain, and that means opening the pores to accept and hold the moisture in the dermal layers.
Warmth is a common tool for opening the pores, and initiating moisture into the dermis, so a steam towel of simple water is a good start to feeling better...and an oil-based moisturizer has a better chance of retaining the moisture and looking better.
Remember to keep the pores clean and moist...Rinse well after any treatment with warm water and apply moisture.

As I also suffer from chronic dry skin and, being a college student look around for anything and everything to try. After reading the back of some of the fancy skin care at the store...and researching fruits ingredients...yes, I have a lot of time on my hands...here are my two.
1) Make a puree of 1 banana and 1 papaya, peach or avacado. Apply to skin. Leave on for at least 20 minutes then rinse with warm water, followed by a moisturizer of natural margarine or natural vegetable oil.
2) Apply natural mayonnaise, either homemade or from natural foods store. Massage into skin, leave on for 15-20 minutes, rinse thoroughly with warm water.
I find the first one is not only cheaper but smells better and feels better. E-mail me if you want any more help.
Luv ya,
L. Kolsky

Mayo works good, I don't do the full face mask thing, just put some on the dry areas and let it set for 1/2 hour or so. I also have used it on my hair, works great and sure is less costly. You get a lot out of a jar. Any kind of cooking oil also, we always thing of olive oil, but even corn, or any vegetable oil works.
I am really sorry about your cat, I would do the same thing.
Take care.

I know this sounds gross but egg whites. just crack open the egg and put the egg whites into a bowl then take a cotton ball and dab the egg whites on your face, let it dry,(your face will get real tight) then take a wash rag soaked with warm water and lay it on your face to loosen the egg whites, then proceed to wash it off. then splash your face with cool water and dab dry with a towel. this helps with dry skin, it also cleans out your pores and you face will be glowing. dont forget to moisturize when your done.
