Its a cyst- kind of like a reoccurring huge pimple.Usually if someone has one it is a small knot under the skin that only swells up if it gets irritated and infected-usually after it will bust or shrink back down and come back again later. You can get a staph infection if the area were to stay infected for too long a time-but I get them all the time on my face and ears and have had some pretty bad infections but never got staph infection that I know of.A nuisance and painful but pretty harmless. Not contagious...I have had a skin disorder that causes these all the time,my dermatologist has made it clear its in no way contagious think the guy above me is a bit nutty.

If it's a boil, then it's a staph infection (Staphlococcus Aureus). Boils usually come to a head, break open and the pus comes out. It's contagious when it does this. If not, and they don't go down, they can be dangerous. They can go into septicemia (blood poisoning) which can be life threatening. Be careful about any fever.
