I hate shots. Always have. I have to get TWO! according to the stupid law. Is there anyway to make them less painless? Please! I'll try almost anything(not retarded) to make it not hurt as much.

Try Emla. You can ask for it at the pharmacy. When I have to get an IV, that's what I use. It kind of numbs the skin.

The pain is mostly psychological. You already know this. It is just a sting for a couple of seconds.

If you are going to "freak out", ask your doctor to prescribe a tablet of valium and propranolol. This would calm yourself and minimize the psychological pain. Also don't look. Look away. Don't close your eyes.

You can apply some external analgesic lotion (commonly sold for relieving pain and itching) to that area. But that is somewhat limited since it won't penetrate below the skin. You can also take some pain medication like Moltrin.

But I think it is best to try to get over the fear that you developed when you were a small child.

Actually, the best way is to relax...mind over matter.

When you tense your arm while the needle goes in, you rip muscle tissue and it become much more painful. I look away and relax the arm. The needle is in and out with no pain.

The pain is even worse itf the muscle is tense when the shot is given...

dude.. it is painful having your parents lose their lives.. but the addie and her mom deal are trying to provide the best help they can. your not giving them anything good in return but attitude. and i read all of tha t" i want addie to hurt like i do " bogus makes you sound selfish and un-caring. addie is trying to be a supportive girlfriend as she was meant to be, and eventually; you will be ahppy again. but you can alwyas keep your parents within your heart. and congrats to addie for telling you she isnt a piece of meat; how dare you cheat on her like that when she has done nothing but try to be honest and nice to you. about the whole i want some thing, she wnats to wait and make sure she can honestly trust you. trust takes a great time to build in a boyfriend girlfriend relationship, and some people do not grasp that concept. i am sorry for your losses, and i suggest you apologize to addie ; hence find someone who will make you happy in the love life & be kind and honest with her mother.

Give the shot on the second slow exhale (I had my daughter by natural childbirth also)
Telling yourself "it doesn't hurt" won't work so well, because the subconscious hears the word "hurt" last.

it usually the fear of the shot and not the shot itself. if it makes you feel better ask the nurse to count to 3 and have her stick it in on 3. it will make you in control of the shot. it always helps me. i hate waiting for it and not knowing when its coming. lol

I use this method that I learned in Lamaze class.

***Take a BIG deep breath through your nose.

Slowly release your breath through your mouth.

***repeat from ***

Tell the person that will be giving you a shot to administer it on the second 'breath out."

It is scientifically proven, that if you make yourself think that something doesnt hurt, it will lessen the pain, but you have to constantly think-"It doesnt hurt it doesnt hurt..." i swear it works- try it after kiking a stairs

Relax your muscles as much as possible. Tensing up muscles from nervousness makes it more painful.
