gargle with salt water, swish with peroxide, brush your teeth, then use ANTIBACTERIAL mouth wash. do it 3 times a day for a week, and BAM your gums should be back to normal.
(my dentist told ME to do this last year and I had success)

I agree with most of these answers BUT when using the
Peroxide, mix it 1to1 with water. Straight peroxide is
pretty hard on gum tissue and don't swallow any or you
may need poison control.
If she has a gum swollen in just one place, it is either something stuck up in the gum, or a cavity on that tooth,
or an abcess from an infection. All these answers are stop-
gap measures, but the real answer is get to a dentist even
if it's a clinic of some sort. Even go ask at an emergency
room and they will refer you to free or low cost dentists and
won't charge you for the information. Just don't sign in as
an emergency room patient.

depending on the problem, the best remedy is most likely good oral hygiene. if she has severe pain or swelling or swelling in one area of the mouth only, she really should contact a dentist. if the swelling is all over, she should brush her teeth gently twice a day, floss thoroughly every day, use a warm salt water rinse and/or an antiseptic rinse, like listerine or crest prohealth. brushing too often or too hard, or flossing too much can irritate the gums also, so be sure not to overdo it. if it doesn't clear up at home, she should call a dentist. hope this helps.

Gargle salt water! It will help the swelling go down and hopefully clean out whatever is infecting her.

how good is her oral hygeine? i know if you don't regularly brush/floss and do everything you're supposed to that can cause problems... gingivitis and other gum diseases... in which case you would pretty much have to go to the dentist. however, if she is brushing too hard that can also cause irritation and swelling.
