my step son is 12. and he is in limbo with things,
in some ways he wants to still be the "kid" but other ways he wants to be treated like a "teenager" it is an age of a whole lot of hormones and body changes.

toys: video games. video games and cartoons.
oh and a favorite sport or hobby. him drumming.

foods. look in the snack cupboard.

girls its the dress to impress. again hormone and body changes.
activities-comes with the first part.
foods. varies.

and for both "must fit in or make a statement" attitude. and sadly all the downfalls with it. smoking drinking drugs and sex. and most important to them"designer clothes"

my suggestion though "go to a local junior high, show them your assignment and school id" ask to interview some kids there.
make a quick questions list.
or even ask if you could give a survey sheet to hand out.

My son is 12. He is in junior high and he is no longer my little boy. He is in to girls big time. He loves and plays all sports. He is getting acne and will not listen to anything I have to say about what he can do to make it better. He is also growing hair everywhere. He thinks he knows everything and that he doesn't need me anymore. He doesn't play with toys anymore. He is all music, sports, girls and friends. My 12 year is a great kid. 12 year old's are really at a age they don't know where they fit in. To old for toys but to young for lots of adult things I think 12 year old feel lost in a way trying to find there way into teenager and the adult world.

If it is child development-look under Freud and Piaget and google the psychosocial development and emotional development of that age.
I am doing the same thing for my class-my advice is to ask a school or YMCA if you can observe that age-show them your school I.D. and typically they are more than glad to help.

Our local pediatrician keeps these wonderful handouts titled "What to Expect from your ___ year old" that have a great deal of age appropriate information. It isn't always accurate because each kid is different (yes, God has a sense of humor), but they have a great deal of valuable information.

Your local pediatrician may be a great resource.

Being a 12 yo boy is tough. It's the age between 'pee-pee" and "dick". I'm not sure what girls call theirs. Hormones flowing, hair growing, junk food cramming, 'girls or friends?', 'girls or sports?', 'girls or lunch?', 'girls or grades?', 'girls or pizza?'
And I'm not a pervert either.
