While I can't tell you how to cook EVERYTHING under the sun I can give you some advice. Stove top cooking, NEVER COOK ANYTHING ON HIGH HEAT!!!, always use medium heat to cook. There is an exception to this rule but I don't think you will be deep frying anything soon.
In an oven 30 min at moderate tempeture is a good start. In the US a moderate oven is 350 - 400 deg F. I'm not sure what the metric conversion is.
A simmer looks like soda in a glass, a boil is based on the size of the bubbles (low or light is small bubbles, meduim is just that and a rolling boil means that there is no still liquid in the pot).
Watch cooking shows. I'm not sure about Aussie TV but I do know that Britian's BBC has some very good cooking shows. And ALWAYS PAY ATTENTION TO WHAT YOU ARE DOING. Never leave the kitchen with something on the heat, weither it's on the stove or in the oven.
Other than that get some cooking books or call your mother/sister/grandmother back home and ask for help.

I ASSUME YOU KNOW WHAT YOU LIKE. WELL, THEN GO TO THE MARKET AND BUY WHATEVER IT IS THEN JUST TOSS IT IN A PAN W/COVER OR MICROWAVE IT IN A DISH AND EAT IT. YOU CAN BOIL MOST EVERYTHING INCLUDING VEGGIES AND MEATS, CHICKEN ETC. YOU DONT NEED A COOKBOOK. ANYTHING THAT LOOKS LIKE IT TAKES LONGER THAN SOMETHING ELSE TO COOK , START IT FIRST AND LET IT BOIL THEN WHEN ITS ABOUT DONE TOSS IN THE VEGGIES,POTATOES, ETC AND PUT THE COVER BACK ON THE POT AND COOK THE WHOLE THING A FEW MORE MINUTES AND YOU HAVE A DELICIOUS MEAL. BE SURE TO ADD WATER TO STUFF SO IT DOESNT BURN ON THE DISH. THE WATER FROM THE COOKING IS EXCELLENT BROTH SO YOU CAN DRINK THE BROTH. A WEE BIT OF SOY SAUCE HEIGHTENS THE FLAVOR OF ABOUT EVERYTHING AND A T THE SAME TIME ADDS A BIT OF SALT FLAVOR. ENJOY

Best way to handle this would be to find help from a fellow student.
There are lots of people at my school that cook for themselves, so you should definitely be able to find one at yours.
Or you could ask the RA to direct you to someone that does (if you're in the dorm).

Heck, you may even make a friend in the process.

My stepbrother makes single serving spaghetti from plain cooked Ramen noodles and pre-made spaghetti sauce. I have never been brave enough to try it, but he loves it.
