Check with your state law, my 5 yr old is legally able to be out of a booster. My 3 yr old is in a booster with a back to it. She is over the weight limit and age requirements. Your 3 yr old could be in a booster with a back. Good luck, my 3 yr old loves her new seat and it sits her up better and fits her perfect.

I put my 2 1/2 yr old in a booster seat. She figured out how to get out of the carseat with a harness though. She's at the weight limit for the booster and stays in it (unlike the other carseat). I think it depends on the state law and if your children are ready for it or not.

My 9 yr old is still in a no-back booster. He's 48" tall and only in the 50 lb range. I know I may be abnormal but it's not worth losing him a car accident just for something so dumb! My 4 year old is now in a high back booster. I've seen signs that they should stay in until they're 4'7".
Just wanted to add that I live in MI, where the law is 4-4-4, once they reach 4 years, 4 ft tall, 40 lbs they no longer are legally required to ride in a booster but even the manufacturer suggests them to be much bigger than that.

Mine are almost 8 and sit on the seat in a H harness that they can wear till they weigh 32 kg. They came out of their booster at 4 which is when they became too tall and we followed all the recommendations set out by child safety at Vic Roads. The longer in their H harness the better(if you are not sure what a h harness is their is a picture on the second link)

That 3 year old at 42 pounds may be too heavy for the 5-point harness. Unless it is a Britax Husky, it won't withstand the force of a crash.
If you can get the 3 year old to hang with a booster, I'd go that route. If not, the Britax is probably the best 5-point seat on the market for the heavier kids.

First you have to look at the law, depending on where you live a child could have to be in a booster up until age 7-8.....My lil mans not that old yet so I can't help too much but I would hope that most people go by whatever age/weight the law says!

in pa there are billboards every where saying
"the magical number is 4'9" until then they need a booster or car seat."
my son is 4 1/2 and 40 lbs and was just moved to a booster. only, because i knew he wouldnt pull a "magic" trick with the belt.

I moved my son from a 5-point to a booster at age 3 1/2 and he was 45lbs. 45lbs is the weight requirement for my state (California) and they usually don't vary much between states. Sounds like your 3y/o is almost ready. I got my boy a Britax Parkway and he looooves it! Good luck.

I think its a National law that says they have to be 42" before coming out of the seat! Which I think is like in Kindergarten.. But I am not 100% positive on what age they would be 42"..

In AZ its 80lbs or 5 years previous, which i detect weird and wonderful thinking no longer many if any 5 year olds are 80lbs! My son is in simple terms approximately six, lol its humorous i became arguing with him right this moment appropriate to the automobile seat and why he had to be in it nonetheless, he's barely 52lbs.. yet legally i will permit him out of it, although im going to attend till the shoulder belt is going for the period of his shoulder an no longer his neck, i attempted to describe that too him, yet all he can think of is toddlers circulate in automobile seats lol. I wasnt 80lbs till approximately 8th grade, that could of been very awkward!! particular shall we circulate to the mall, can ya strap me in!! Wow, that internet site doesnt even point out the burden shrink, a cop buddy advised me that one however... there's a newborn in my sons classification who's rather small he's ideal to the size of my 3 a million/2 year previous nephew, i couldnt think of letting him circulate and not applying a automobile seat in simple terms simply by fact he became 5! i'm hoping maximum mom and dad are smarter then that lol.
