without 2 keys you will need to take it to a dealership. The keys must be programed by a ford scan tool. I have not seen the keys go bad. If the problem is with the key your theft light will flash rapidly when the key is in the on position. good luck

There is no sync process... basically when you turn the key, there is a little transceiver (think of it like a cb radio or cell phone in that you can talk and listen at the same time) near the end of the key cylinder that reads the key chip and if it's one that is stored in memory, it allows the truck to turn over.
On some older ones, you could do the key with one (and there was a process of making a key by a special cycle that took an hour), but on yours and anything made since 1997, you need two keys or the Ford scan tool to access and reprogram the 1 key to the car.
Usually the key chip goes bad (dropping it numerous times or more than about 10 feet normally does it) or the transceiver stops working usually.
Unfortunately, looks like a tow job to the local Ford dealer to diagnose...

I had to do this exact thing with my Expedition. Easy! Go to a FORD dealer and tell them what you need. You should be able to use the orginal key but maybe not. It only takes them a matter of 2 minutes. I can't remember exactly what I saw him do but you have to hold one button down and turn the ignition on and off 2 or 3 times. It gets the remote to pick up the correct signal and programs itself. Thats the only way I know you can have it done for very cheap maybe free! Some dealers can be really cool about things like this. GOOD LUCK
KEYS CAN GO BAD!

Without the two Original keys you'll have to take it to your nearest FORD dealership, or one that you trust. I work at a Dealership here in parts, they Keys are about $36.95 each ,some dealers charge more, some less. Service Charges one hours worth of labor to program the keys. They'll Need Your Explorer, they take it in the shop, hook it up to a Lap top with Ford Software that connects to your Diag port (OB-II) and then they have to reprogram the PCM to allow the new key to start the truck. I suggest that you have two more cut so you don't have to run into this again. Good luck, and any more questions feel free to email me at: ccerniglia@crowleyauto.net

Take it to a locksmith, not a dealer. The locksmith will be much more affordable
