I'm a dentist.

Generally, no more painful than having a tooth extracted surgically. Obviously the doctor should send you home with adequate pain medications.

Bone is often taken from the very back part of your maxillary alveolar ridge (i.e. your "upper jaw bone"), which is properly known as the "tuberosity", or, it can be taken from the anterior portion of the ascending ramus of your lower jaw. In either case, these areas are visualized for surgical wisdom teeth extractions, so it's not a "major" procedure per se.

A BONE GRAFT MAY JUST INVOLVE PUTTING ARTIFICIAL BONE INTO A SOCKET AFTER AN EXTRACTION. FOR AN EXTRACTION OF A BACK TOOTH THIS IS SELDOM NEEDED. THE BONE HEALS JUST FINE. FOR A FRONT TOOTH SURGICAL REPLACEMENT OF BONE MAY BE INVOLVED WHICH IS A BIT MORE INVOLVED AND MORE HEALING IS INVOLVED. YOU'LL BE JUST FINE. DON'T WORRY
