i met this prof last year, and I am one of his most impressing students and i visits his office frequently ( for academic purpose). Now the course is over, and he knows that i am attracted to him.we have been changing few emails, and he is a great young man, definitely a scientist. He is 32 years old, single and lives with his dog, and i am 21. Few days ago i decided to make a movement, and i emailed him to ask him out for lunch, and he replied saying that I am a lovely young woman and he enjoys talking with me when i visit his office, but for several reasons he needs for our relationship to remain professional... I understand and i respect his professional attitude, coz this is really important for him as he has been in our uni 2 years as assistant professor, Even he doesnt teach me now, i still have lots of friends in his class, coz he teaches 2nd year, and his collegues teaches me as well, so that might be his concern... I guess i will just wait for some time until i leave school ?

Yes, definitely wait until you have no further ties with the school. Perception is reality, so you don't want people think that a harmless lunch to you could mean that you guys are f**king and you get special grades from it.

As long as the student is 18+ then there are no laws about it. Note, however, that even in places where the age of consent it 14, 15 or 16, it can still be considered statutory rape if the student is under 18 due to the position of authority the professor holds over the student. Other than that, I'm sure most universities would have strict policies against professor-student relations, but as far as the law is concerned they are two consenting adults.

If you e-mailed to school em address you might have screwed up and not got the real answer. Most big companies (and schools) copy and review lots of internal (intranet) e-mail so he might not have said what he wanted. If that's what you did, find a reason to visit, if he looks freaked out, he thinks you are stalking. If not, you will be able to tell.

I think he was trying to let you down gently. You are no longer his student, so a relationship would be fair game if he wanted one. I'd find a non-professor and date them instead.
