She's been acting extremely jumpy and nervous, drinking a lot, and eating far more than usual. Am I just overreacting?

This sounds like feline diabetes! Take a look at your cat's coat...does it look oily or is it full of dandruff? Has your cat lost weight? Even if it isn't diabetes you should stop feeding your cat dry cat food IMMEDIATELY!! Cats have a much shorter gastrointestinal tract than we humans do, so they don't require carbohydrates and lots of fiber to push digested food through their systems. Being designed as natural carnivores, their major source of calories should be coming from proteins then fats and as few carbohydrates as possible. Lions and tigers don't eat grains, neither should domesticated cats. (Fancy Feast brand canned food has some excellent choices for a proper feline diet. )Cats will try to compensate for the lack of fats and protein in their diet by overeating the dry/junk food that does not fill them up properly. Dry cat food is terrible for them and is filled with grain and vegetable "fillers" (most likely corn- a very sugary vegetable) The FDA does not strictly regulate what goes into pet food nor do they require the pet food industry to supply proper nutritional information to the consumer. More information can be found about diabetes and proper diet on these websites:

I hope this helps!!

It's better to be safe than sorry, so I don't think you are overreacting.

The eating more than usual could be a sign of hyperthyroidism, which affects a lot of cats, especially those that are older. My cat is almost 18 and was just diagnosed. Her son had it, and passed away at 16. It is treatable by medication.

The excessive drinking may mean your cat has a fever, or diabetes.

Keep an eye on her for awhile, and check her bowel movements, etc. for any signs of change. If her symptoms persist, or if she becomes lethargic or vomits, please take her to the vet.

Good luck to you, and I hope this helps. :)

No, you're not. First ask yourself if there's anything that's been going on in your life that could be creating stress for her, and try to calm things down. But you should also take her immediately to the vet to have her checked out, because it will take the vet's knowledge to determine if it's more than stress-related. Don't hesitate, your cat is suffering.

Hi there...your cat may have either hyperthyroidism or diabetes which includes excessive drinking and increased appetite--both are life-threatening disorders if not treated quickly.
