whoa, whoa, whoa, some crazy answers for this questions. How long until the 5k? How much experience do you have running? Based on your experience level and time until race day, I would start slow...run 2-3 days per week, slowly, if you feel any significant pain, stop. Speed up and increase distances slowly over time. Search google for training schedules for more detail but I would say:
You don't need to run over 2 miles in prep. If you can run 2 miles regularly, you will be able to do a 5k with no problem. Then you can work on setting PR's.
Good luck...Running 5k's are great, but be careful. If you try to do too much, too fast, you will hurt yourself and not have any fun!

A 5K is nothing, a little over three miles so the question is what is your goal. Jog 5 MILES a day, 5 days a week and you'll ace the 5K. Good luck.
