LOS ANGELES – Hundreds of illegal immigrants arrested over the past week in one of the biggest U.S. stings have been deported, but some are being held for possible criminal prosecution.
Federal authorities announced Tuesday the results of a weeklong series of raids in the Los Angeles metropolitan area that targeted illegal immigrants who had previously been deported for crimes or defied final deportation orders.

Of the 761 people arrested in a five-county region since Jan. 17, more than 450 have already been removed from the country, according to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
More than half of those arrested in the sweeps were already in jail and are being turned over to federal authorities as their sentences expire, an ICE official said.

At least one person, however, was hit with a criminal case instead of being placed in civil deportation proceedings. .....

I think so. The problem is that there is always one group who thinks this is not humane. They always go back to the days when America was founded and immigrants came to America. We are at a different time and place in America's history. Therefore we adapted and made rules. Why do think we are No#1. Even with all the laws in place. America is still the mostly highly sought after countrly to live in by forgeiners. This is fine as long as they adhere to the laws of our country and enter properly. We are tired of illegals who are involved in criminal activity and do nothing but cost American tax payers money!

Don't know that it's the "voice of patriotic Americans", but it shows that there are attempts being made to ENFORCE the laws the US already has.

To Frann B - only one person had a NEW criminal case opened, but you seem to have overlooked the sentence that said "More than half of those arrested in the sweeps were already in jail". That means at least 381 (that's 50% +1 of 761) were ALREADY IN JAIL. So no, it doesn't shoot a hole in the whole "illegals are committing the crimes" theory. It actually backs it up, that over half of the illegals rounded up were in jail already when the sweeps started.

I think they finally are starting to realize they were given a inch and they took a yard. Much of America didn't care they were here until they got upity and started demanding things, bashing the US and calling those who demand that they respect our country and our laws racist. Now they are beggining to feel the backlash. Its gonna get worse. Bottom line, they are here illegally and in much the same way if I broke into someones house and moved in, I would be promptly arrested.
As far as the poster saying only one person got arrested, you need to read the story again. The purpose of the raid was deportation of which most of them were. The one person you refered to was held for criminal prosecution in lieu of deportation because he probably committed a serious offense, for which he will serve time and then be deported. And, for the reocrd, each and everyone arrested was arrested for a criminal offense. Violating immigration laws by entering and remaining in the US without authorization. Plus many of them missed hearings and had warrants . The one arrest you refer to was mentioned because he is going to state crimnal court as opposed to right to the border like the rest. highly doubt you'd ins that at your average mall....

If I support amnesty, does that make me an unpatriotic American?

I know I'm not simply an apathetic American, because I clearly support something.

Therefore, the only option left is unpatriotic American. Yes, I must be an unpatriotic American.

It's quite a relief, actually. I was a little weirded out when I tuned into a radio interview of Jim Gilchrist, and everything was silent. Now I know, it was simply because I couldn't hear him, because he's a patriotic American. Or maybe there's just something wrong with my car radio. I'm not sure.

I realize Yahoo! Answers is the place for loaded questions, but it is also the place for sarcastic responses. So there's mine.

Yes, this is an start. A small step in the right direction. But now we must continue to voice this message even louder. Not necessarily by fences or borders but also with economic and political boundaries.

761 picked up and only one held for criminal offenses. Kinda shoots a hole in the line of thought that illegals are committing all this crime doesn't it....I bet if you picked up 761 people at the mall the average would be alot higher.

Possibly, but, we have a long road to finish this mess up. As far as "only one being a criminal" , all of them are criminals, they were all illegally here in the USA. Not too hard to figure that one out huh??
