They are useful to the cat in many ways. One that has not been mentioned yet is that they also protect the eyes for when they are touched the cats will blink for protection.
So cutting them off is just plain mean. You shouldn't have a pet if you don't respect or protect them.

A cat's whiskers are like feelers that let the cat know it will fit into a certain size space. If the whiskers fit, the cat won't get stuck. If you cut off the cats whiskers, it may go into a hole or pipe that it shouldn't and it may get stuck.

If a cat trys to go through an opening in a wall or whatever if the whiskers don't bend back then the cat knows he will fit all the way through that opening!

Cat whiskers help cats sense where they are and what is going on. If there is a hole they're trying to get into they will tell them if they can make it though. Cutting them off will severly disrupt the cat, and may help lead to an early death.

A cat's whiskers are present so they can sense their surroundings. If you were to cut them off, they would be terribly disoriented, and I don't reccommend it.

cat whiskers help a cat determine to width of its body. if you cut them off your cat will find itself in a place so tight that it won't beable to turn around. It will die stuck.
