I know that Hawaii is tropical and snakes love tropics, but it's also an island...and I'm going to hawaii soon and have the biggest fear of snakes in the history of herpephobia so I'm just wondering if there are any snakes there??

I'm sorry I meant to say "herpetophobia"

No, Blondie!
I've lived among rattlesnakes, cottonmouths, and many other snakes, poisonous or not--- and had to deal with them on a regular basis, dispatching by beheading them with shovels, or scooping them into covered buckets to be released elsewhere when possible. And I am so "herpephobic" (Is that the right word? Seems like that would be fear of getting herpes) ...anyway...I used to have nightmares about snakes and couldn't even see them in books. But I had little kids who played outside--- and we lived in the country in CA and FL--- so I had to learn to cope.
When we moved to HI I was ecstatic! Hikes and walks in the jungle---with no fear! I love it!
There is actually a teeny tiny very rare snake native to Hawaii--- about the size of an earthworm (which I am almost as ridiculous about as snakes!) But despite gardening and living here for years, I have never encountered one.
BUT there are centipedes!!! UCK! Little nasty snakes with creepy little legs--- and they bite!

Here is what I know about this issue: It is very difficult to acquire a pet snake in Hawaii, because they are not allowed to be imported. People might like to break the law, but it is very hard to do. The snakes that have made it to Hawaii are generally large constrictor type tree-dwelling snakes that hitch-hike on cargo ships (and possibly airplanes, but I have trouble believing that they survive at the altitudes where modern planes fly). It is true that these snakes have no predators in Hawaii, because mongoose (which are known for killing snakes) cannot climb trees, nor can they kill large constrictor-type snakes. Mongoose may predate their offspring, though. In general, proliferation of snakes has not been a serious problem in Hawaii, because the ones that do manage to get into the wild there are tracked down and removed fairly quickly.

There are no snakes native to Hawaii. But occasionally they do have snakes show up on cargo ships. So they maintain vigillance to keep snakes out using Mongoose. That's what they told us when we were there.

NO snakes in Hawaii. they are illegal. They may get stuck in the landing gear on a plane or so, but they are taken care of immediately.
