Well, the usual feminist-Pagan-historical perspective says that the "serpent" represented feminine earth-based religious belief, and choosing the serpent meant rejecting God the sky-father.
Snakes are pretty popular in many traditional Pagan-type religions. Like, say, Greek and Mesopotamian religions, also stuff from the Americas. Snakes are often seen as bad because they're related to female deity power, so they've gotten a bad rap by paternalistic *******-types. Or they're co-opted by dudes like Hermes and Apollo (Python killer.)
Personally, I think snakes are cool. But I've worked VERY hard to overcome my natural squeamishness, so that wouldn't be my natural response.

The tale of Eve and the snake was based on beliefs by neighboring pagan peoples, of the divine connection of snakes. So in the Hebrew creation story the snake was made out to be the bad guy as a slam at the competition.

They would not be a better vehicle or vessel to tempt Eve. The snake is much better creature to do that. Snake can move stealthily, speedily, and soundlessly like the kitten and it can easily hung on the tree to talk to Eve.

If a puppy tempted Eve, I guess we'd be walking our pet snakes around the block.

The enmity between women and snakes came as a result of that event. Perhaps before that women felt the same way about snakes that they do about puppies and kittens.

Good point. Unless the "snake" was a metaphor for "penis", in which case Eve would certainly have been tempted, for all women like penises.

The Serpent used to have legs, or at least something. They didn't crawl. After the fall of man, God punished the snake by making it walk on its belly. Before that, the Serpent could've been cute and cuddly, who knows?

If you don't believe that the serpent spoke, you wouldn't believe a puppy or kitten did either.

The snake was not as it is now. Satan was a beautiful being. After man's sin, the snake had to crawl on his belly.
