Class A drivers license is 1 of 3 different "Commercial Drivers Licenses you can get. With a Class A you can drive a vehicle weighing over 26000 lbs. There are different endorsements you can get to this license like to be able to drive hazardous waste, air brakes or passengers. And each endorsement you need to take an additional test, and of course pay an additional fee. The CDL system is recognized in all states and honored. All of the CDL and endorsements require you to not just past a written test, but also a road test in the specific vehicle you are applying for. Like if you are driving or want to drive a truck with hazardous waste, you have to have a written test for the Class you will be driving ABor C plus hazardous waste. Air brakes requires a truck with air brakes etc. You can get a book at any DMV with the requirements and information you will need.

Each state has their own rules, but in most a Class A license allows you to drive tractor trailers, and anything else other than a motorcycle. In most, if not all states, you do not need to have a lower class license to get a Class A. Most people start with a Class C (auto and truck under 26,001 lbs GVWR), but it is not required that you do so!

Thats you freakishly huge 18 wheelers. Here is a ladder of classes. In order to obtain this you have to have held a Class B license. To get this you must have a Class C license. To obtain that you must held a Class D license in high school with no major traffic convictions when you reach age 18.
