Our vet told us it was very common for blue dobies to have skin problems and that there was nothing we could do for her. I buy my shampoo at the vet and she eats well and takes vitamins from the vet also. She has a terrible odor and bathing barely helps plus the vet told me not to bath her too often but the smell is so bad if I don't. She is 10 yrs. old and has had this her entire adult life. She doesn't have much fur left and has alot of problems with tooth tartar. Her nails are very brittle. Does anyone have any ideas?

for her smell you can buy some doggie purfume but be carefull to not spray it too close to her face. For the tooth tartar try buying toys that get rid of that.

this is a very common problem with blue dobbies. my best friends blue is 1 yr old and is coping with many of the same issues you are. the vet can do a dental scraping for the tartar. use vitamin e oil directly on skin irritations and buy a lot of Cologne for him or a clothespin for your nose. the toe nails could be due to a vitamin deficiency, your vet can check this.

Sounds like typical Blue Dobe problems - sorry.

Try www.akc.org & contact members of your closest local Doberman club - maybe they can direct you to a vet dermatologist they reccomend, or give some helpful advice.

I can't give you any helpful tips. Alopecia is fairly common in most blue dogs, ecept for ones where the blue is a standard. I know someone who adds omega3 fish oil to her chihuahua's food and it does help the coat. Nothing will cure it as you know.

get a second opinion. If you were told that is how you have to live the rest of your life...you'd opt for a second opinion...why should your pet be any different?
