I like this girl, but I never see her in public outside of school, and she is always with her friends. I am a man and can be blunt like the best of them, but I'm not willing to embarrass myself in front of her friends. So, I wrote her an online not saying that I didn't want to tell her I liked her in front of all of her friends. Did I make the right decision? Or does this seem like a weakness?

I think you just don't want to be criticized by her peers. There is nothing wrong with that. Being scared to do something isn't always a weakness. Maybe you just want to keep it between each other until you find out if it is going to work.
Don't worry, if she really likes you, then she will not let the fact that you don't want to embarrass your self, bother her.

I don't think it seems weak at all. She (if she is nice) will appreciate your honesty and probably like you for it. Good luck. : )
