The AK-47 (shortened from Russian: Автомат Калашникова образца 1947 года, Avtomat Kalashnikova 1947).

Is a gas-operated assault rifle designed by Mikhail Kalashnikov, and produced by Russian manufacturer Izhevsk Mechanical Works and used in many Eastern bloc nations during the Cold War. It was adopted and standardized in 1947.[3] Compared with the auto-loading rifles used in World War II, the AK-47 was generally more compact, with a shorter range, a smaller 7.62 × 39 mm cartridge, and was capable of selective fire. It was one of the first true assault rifles and remains the most widely used and known. More AK-47 rifles and variants have been produced than any other assault rifle; production continues to this day.[4]

AK is an acronym - Avtomat (Automatic in russian) + Kalashnikhov (the inventor) and 47 is the model no. These guns are also therefore known as Kalashnikhovs. There are other variants in the Kalashnokhov category but AK-47 remains the gun of choice amongst operators.

Mikhail Kalashnikov is the name of the guy that invented the weapon. Too bad it was for the Soviets, he didn't make any money off of it.

So the K is his last name. The A stands for Avtomat which I am almost sure is automatic in Russian.

And the 47 is the year it was designed/introduced, not sure which but it was in 47 that it first came out.

While all the 2web sites well pointed out by above will tell you of weapons chaactieristics and history it is nto the end all or be all of small arms for infantryman.
It is a close in weapon , acurracy and bullet damage are very poor, the 7.62X 39 is about like a 30/30 round and unable to penetrate even a modest protective vest with all the new lead core ammo available in US and what we give the Iraqui police and military to fire.
Just in case of friendly fire accidents you know.
What you can buy in US is a piece of crap and no better than an SK at half the price.
Unless one gets an early import , not chinese, and even the Finnish variant called a Valmet are decent.
Newer variants use a totally different round, smaler but mre effecient.
Half of the Aks out thee in world are about burnt out barrels gas ports so pitted as to be almost unusable.
Good for cowboys and macho rednecks who know no better than the Arab militias and such.
Do not even think of buying one as the next round of gun gravbs is in thewing already and you could end up selling it on the street corner to a Mommys AgainstViolence for two tickets to see bambi.
