It's just for travel taking you out of the country. If your simply traveling to another city or state in the U.S., you don't need to take your passport.

NO NOT WITHIN THE USA.
Beginning on January 23, 2007, all persons -- including U.S. citizens -- traveling by air from Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Bermuda will be required to have a passport in order to enter the United States. A second phase of passport requirements will apply to land and sea travelers, beginning as early as January 2008.
PUERTO RICO IS EXCLUDED FROM THIS LAW.

You need a passport when you leave the U.S.

You do not need one to travel between the states.

If you are a US citizen, you need no paperwork. However, if you are not a citizen it is best to carry your Social Security card and your Green Card (if you have one).
