...and what's that all about, it sounds a bit dodgy to me.

And before someone says I took it out of context, please give the context.

That would be the book of Matthew, chapter 10, versus 34-39. To quote:

"Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. For I have come to turn a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law — a man's enemies will be the members of his own household.

"Anyone who loves his father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone who loves his son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me; and anyone who does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me. Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it."

In this chapter Jesus is empowering and instructing his disciples as a whole. He gives them a lot of general advice. But a lot of it sounds like the above. He also warns to be on guard against other people... "they will hand you over to the local councils and flog you in their synagogues".

In other words, Jesus seems to be anticipating the strife that his different ideas are about to cause (and are STILL causing in the religion and spiruality section!). People are going to get angry about it. He's not advising his disciples to avoid such trouble, but to plan for it and be able to deal with it.

A good summary is near the end: "Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it." Another way of saying 'don't be cowards - some of you are going to be killed, but it'll all turn out okay in the end'.

But yes, it does sound kind of bad if you take it out of context.

Jesus was a Rabbi and taught a new form of Judaism of which was today really Reformed Judaism. And that means he was here to separate the wrong and cast out the demons from our souls and rid us of guilt to be free to choose between the right and wrongs of religions that we so heavily used back then to govern. Man made laws, he spiritually lifted you to know that you were forgiven if you would cast our your demons and follow the path he laid down for you to enter the Kingdom of heaven and as you see he said he will deny you before God if you do not. Yes he died to cleanse us from our sins, but we have continued to sin? So now when he returns? Who knows what he will do with that sword, brother against brother, etc., War? To separate again to rid the earth now of the disease that mankind has spread, pestilence, fornication, idolotry, plain hate and misery, jealousy, greed, spiteful arrogance and plainly a total disregard of the value of human life and the earth?

Matthew 10:24-36 "Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. For I have come to turn a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law -a man's enemies will be the members of his own household."
***To get the context, you must read more than the verse in question. Sometimes it will be a couple of verses before verseX and a couple of verses behind. Sometimes, as in this case, you need to read the whole chapter.

Does not the relationship between Believers and Atheists seem to be a war? or that between the Believers and the Muslims? or the Believers and Buddhists? some on more personal levels than just ideology.

This is proof of the fact that Jesus claimed to be the only way to Heaven. The Sword causes division-physically in the flesh, and Spiritually in the doctrine of faith. When a Believer tells someone that they can not go to Heaven unless they believe in Jesus, a war of sorts usually breaks out. People do not want to hear that.
Because of this statement, many fathers have disowned their sons, many women their in-laws, many people their friends, etc. That is what the Scripture is saying. When one person comes to Christ and their whole family disowns them or even has them killed (as in Muslim tradtion) then you know that what that person died for is true. And before you say that Muslims die for what they believe in (suicide killings), think about this: They take their own lives. Christians do not take their own lives for their faith-they have their lives taken from them. BIG DIFFERENCE. That is the example the Christ gave in laying down His life for ours. The Muslim idea of suicide is nothing short of self-righteous murder.

Verses 32 and 33 of the same chapter state, "Whoever acknowledges me before men, I will also acknowledge him before my Father in heaven. But whoever disowns me before men, I will disown him before my Father in heaven. "

Christ's sword is the Truth of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. It splits the nations in two-Believer and Non-Believer.
Which side are you on?

Jesus said in Matthew 10:34 :Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword."

"Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword" (Matthew 10:34). Jesus is simply declaring that He is NOT what they expect of the Messiah, tho He is the Messiah they expect. They wanted their Messiah to kick out Rome and institute the 1,000 years of peace right then. Rather, Jesus makes clear that the issue of choosing Him (or not) will divide everyone . . . and, wow, was He ever right!
The context: "For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law. And a man’s foes shall be they of his own household. He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. And he that taketh not his cross, and followeth after me, is not worthy of me. He that findeth his life shall lose it: and he that loseth his life for my sake shall find it. He that receiveth you receiveth me, and he that receiveth me receiveth him that sent me" (Matthew 10:35-40).
It's not "dodgy." It's who God really is. No fence-sitting; you must decide. And lotsa folk will be unhappy with whichever choice you make (read the answers on some of these questions lately? Hoo wow!)

Matthew 10:28 And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.
29 Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing? and one of them shall not fall on the ground without your Father.
30 But the very hairs of your head are all numbered.
31 Fear ye not therefore, ye are of more value than many sparrows.
32 Whosoever therefore shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before my Father which is in heaven.
33 But whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father which is in heaven.
34 Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword.

As others have referred to, all religions have extensive contradictions of their holy books. often Jesus looks to have been a stable guy and the vast majority of his sayings interior the Bible are very lots in favour of peace and particularly supportive of undesirable and excluded people. yet while God exists why could he elect to bare himself to three people interior the middle East 2000 years in the past so as that we've an truly muddled e book that's interpreted by skill of theologians and priests in lots of different techniques. enable's look for suggestions to our problems in a scientific and rational way according to evidence particularly of attempting to comprehend those (very contradictory) books.
