1) By getting a job you will have a better resume. Employers like to hire people who have previously been employed at a minimum-wage job over those who have never worked.
2) Getting a job helps you interact and get involved with the community.
3) Getting a job helps you secure credit. Good credit helps you buy a car and house on your own someday. No car dealership will ever let you buy a car using someone else's credit. You have to have your own.
4) If you get a job now, you can save for the future (which is always important even if you dad does pay the bills).
5) Everyone needs a little spending cash.
6) You won't always want to work. Laziness is adictive.
7) Sitting around the house all day can get boring.

I guess the first question would be, "How old are you?" The answer really depends on that. If you are 18 and above, the answer is that you are about to become the captain of your own destiny, so I would bide my time. If you're younger, I applaud the fact that you feel grown enough to form your own opinion apart from your dad. If your dad thinks that it's degrading to have his daughter work a low-paying job, he may have forgotten that most people don't inherit their wealth, they earned it the hard way, with blood, sweat, and tears and one penny at a time. In the end, the answer really is time. Respect your dad, don't do anything behind his back, respectfully let him know you're opinion and you may win him over. If you don't, well, eventually you'll get to do what you want and raise your children differently.

Maybe he will understand that part you said about appreciating what stuff you earn on your own. It seems to be true that given stuff is usually abused and unappreciated...what you want to avoid. I would think he is trying to give you the opportunity to concentrate full time on school--if are enrolled--you didn't say an age. What kind of job were you looking at? Maybe he had some reservations about that---try to get his undivided attention and settle for a compromise---tell him you want to try it for 6 months. Please keep the conversation calm and as adult as possible...good luck

Tell him you need to learn how to pay for your own things and when you get a job you need to start some where. Did he start by making big bucks? Most likely not

Just go get the job, and after the first paycheck...say "dad, I want to learn to pay my way and this is my first pay check" I am sure he will respect you. Tell him that you have to learn because you can't always depend on him being able to help.

Wow - you are an admirable person to feel that way to begin with. A lot of kids who grow up with money don't have the desires you just relayed that you have.
I would tell him that you are very thankful for what he provides but that you want to prove you can make it on your own as well.
