I am a room parent for a kindergarden class. I have been having trouble figuring out a game that would be age appropriate 5-6 years old. Any suggestions?

Valentine Game: Steal My Heart

Put your Valentine's Day sweets to a playful new use with this simple game.
WHAT YOU NEED:
Bowl of candy hearts
Chopsticks

HOW TO PLAY:
1. To set up, place a bowl of candy hearts on a flat surface within easy reach of the players and hand each person a pair of chopsticks.

2. Set a timer for about 2 to 5 minutes, depending on the ages of your players.

3. At "Go," contestants start removing hearts from the bowl using only their chopsticks, placing the candies in front of them. When time is up, the player with the most hearts wins.

Valentine Game: Valentine Rap
"Rap" someone special's heart up in your love with this personalized rap song.
WHAT YOU NEED:
Blank Tape (video or audio)
Tape recorder or camcorder

HOW TO PLAY:
1. Use your finest rap voice to record it on a tape recorder or camcorder. Fill in the blanks to this rap: Oh (name), your voice it's sweeter than (favorite singer's). And take it from me, you're smoother than (favorite dancer). Your strength! Oh (name), is greater than (favorite superhero's). You're legend to me-you're bigger than (favorite historical figure).

2. Present the tape, lyrics enclosed, to your unsuspecting valentine. For a title, call your special rap song "Oh, Mama," or "Oh, Joey," or whatever the recipient's name is.

VARIATIONS:
Here's another already-made rap. All you have to do is fill in the blanks. Oh (name), you're tough, you're tougher than (favorite pro wrestler). I'll tell it to you straight, you're softer than (favorite pet/stuffed animal). Your brains! Oh (name), are bigger than (favorite intellectual's). You're legend to me, I love you more than (favorite food).

Valentine Game: Cupid's Tree Scavenger Hunt
Tiny little clues lead to great big fun.
WHAT YOU NEED:
Tree branch
Jar
Marbles or stones
Paper
Small gifts
String

HOW TO PLAY:
1. Set up a Valentine's tree centerpiece on the dining room table; a small bare branch held upright in a jar of marbles or stones works well.

2. Write clues on small pieces of paper for items that the kids must find or make of paper and hang on the tree. Then tie the clues onto the branches of the tree.

3. When the kids come back with the last item, have small gifts waiting under the tree.

TIPS:
To create clues, try the following, or use your own funny riddles: 1. I like to bark and chase a stick. Draw a picture of me and hang it up quick. 2. I'm thin and long and colored red. I'm tied around the ponytail on a little girl's head. 3. I've got five points and twinkle in the sly. Cut me out of tinfoil and put me up high. 4. Although my name rhymes with stupid, I'm as cute as can be. Cut my shape out of paper and hang me on the tree. 5. I'm made of two letters and stand for a hug and a kiss. If you hang my picture on the tree, you just can't miss.

Gnome Sweet Gnome Valentine

These cuties are a cinch to mass-produce, and each gnome sweetens the deal with a chocolate kiss under its colorful hat. Plus, as one reader told us, "Anything with glitter or googly eyes is always a hit." CRAFT MATERIALS:
Materials for 1
3-inch-diameter can
4-inch square of felt
Scissors
Nontoxic glue such as Kid's Choice
Paper clip
Chocolate kiss
2 (7-mm) googly eyes, adhesive-backed or not
Pen or marker
3/4-inch office dot sticker

Time needed: 30 Minutes or Less

1. Create a 3-inch circle of felt by pressing the bottom of the can into the felt and cutting along the impression it leaves. Cut the circle into quarters.

2. To form the hat, run a thin line of glue along a straight edge of one felt quarter and press it to the other straight edge. Use a paper clip to hold the edges in place. When the glue is dry, remove the clip. Save the other quarters to make hats for more gnomes.

3. Glue the hat in place on the kiss, then stick or glue on the eyes. (Tip: You won't need much glue. We used a toothpick to apply the eye glue.) Allow the glue to dry. Use a pen or marker to write on a dot sticker and press it to the bottom of the kiss.

Peekaboo Valentine

Here's what we know: more than 90 percent of kids want a valentine for their grandparents. Here's what we suspect: more than 90 percent of grandparents love nothing more than their grandchildren's faces. Merge that data and you get this valentine, a wide-eyed favorite for all ages. CRAFT MATERIALS:
Red card stock
Pencil
Scissors
Ruler
Photocopy of a photo of the giver (with eyes the right size to peep through hole-punch holes)
Hole punch
Glue stick or double-sided tape-marker

Time needed: Under 1 Hour

1. Fold the card stock in half and draw a heart shape with one side along the fold to form a hinge (we used a heart-shaped cookie cutter for a pattern). Cut out the heart, keeping the hinge intact.

2. Measure the distance between the eyes on your photocopy. Use a pencil to mark that distance on the top heart and punch out the eyeholes with a hole punch.

3. Cut the photocopy to fit inside the card and glue or tape it in place, lining up the eyes with the eyeholes. Write "Peekaboo!" on the front of the card, and inside, write "I love you" and any message you like.

Does it have to be a game? Or could it be a craft? I was room mother for several years, and one of the things the kids loved most was making edible chocolate roses. You make the "dough" ahead of time using white chocolate and corn syrup. This time of year you can usually find pink or red chocolate disk candy in a craft store. Just use the recipe below. It will make an edible playdough that kids love. It's very easy for kids this age to roll the dough into 2 or 3 balls, then smash them into a flat circle and wrap them around a candy stick (the long white ones that you'll find in the same part of the store as the chocolate disks.) 2 or 3 "petals" will make a really pretty rosebud that the kids can eat, or take home to mom. The recipe shows a full rose...but that's not necessary. Also, if the rose looks too complicated, you can just let the kids make whatever they want from the dough. Beforehand, seperate a small amount of dough into ziplock bags along with a square of wax paper. This will make it easier to get everyone started. I've done "chocolate playdough" with all ages from 2 to 11, and they ALL loved it!

If you'd rather have a game, Valentine's Bingo is fun...using candy hearts for markers. Also, check the site below for a whole list of valentine games:

Heart Bean Bag Toss
Before the party:
Cut a large heart "target" out of paper or fabric.
Use a marker to make a large X in the center.
Make or purchase three bean bags.
To play - place the heart on the floor and a strip of tape
an appropriate distance away. Six feet for young children
farther for older children. The players form a line and
take turns standing with their toes on the tape.
Toss the bean Bags one at a time attempting to hit the X.
