A single woman's home defense?

As a single woman living alone, I got to thinking that I should have some type of weapon or form of protection around the house just in case something should happen--but here is the thing, I am against guns in a home.

What do you suggest as a weapon/form of protection that is NOT a gun?

Pepper spray. Usually very effective. You must then have the back up weapon to use as well. A solid club. Dogs are good alarm systems. But unless you are willing to spend the money and time on attack and control training, all you are doing is setting yourself up for heavy liability if the dog bites some one who is not a threat; like the cop trying to help you.
Tasers are nice but you only get two shots with the device, you might miss.
Stun guns are sometimes ineffective and you have to hold the device against your attacker's body. Too close for comfort.
Soooo, pepper spray and a club are the best way to go.

Something that makes you feel calm, and a gun is just a little threatening, even though it is useful (during the African slave trade way back when, the Africans were NO match for guns) try something hard like a knife or a baseball bat, or even an umbrella or chair.

Just find something that you know you will feel safe with, and you don't have to crush your beliefs to be safe :)

Number two get a dog! does'nt need to be the bigget breed but a chiuhaua may only brng chuckes from a bad guy. Lots of good breeds in the 50 to 70 lb range. Give dog a mans name or a womans if you prefer. If you can't train then take a dog to obediance classes one where you train the dog. Remeber it is your best defence and your best friend for rest of its life.
The dog is only number two becuse he will be a pup for a long time and not ready to defend your honor or valuables, for a while.

Number three is Pepper spray the most effecient size you can wield and remember if too close you do get some effect so be ready to use empty can as a weapon.
Number 4 is discipline, teach your self to be diciplined in your responce, I have seen men with the best miltiary training freeze and lose their lives by not being resolved enough to get to instinct stage of survival mode.

Dogs can be a woman's best friend as well as a man's. I have seen many instances where a dog saved the life of his owners by detering would-be burglars at the window/front door. Being in my field I can honestly say that mace and stun guns are not 100 percent effective. Mace/Pepper spray sold to the pulic is more of an overpowered seasoning. Most burglars have been in trouble before and more than likely have the tast in their mouth and can tolerate it to a level of some sort of resistance. Some people (myself included) are not effected by tazers as most are. We do drop to the ground when fired upon, but do not stay incapacitated for a length of time as others will. Something in our body's makeup allows us to react swiftly when shot and are able to regain composure relatively quickly.

How about a sting gun its not really a gun cause it doesnt consist of bullets but it will get the job done.... A bat would be good but the intruder can always grab it if your not careful.... and that wouldnt be good... you should get the sting gun that you can use far away like it shoots the stinger out and its still attached to the gun because if you got the other one that u use close up again you risk getting hit by the intruder or something else like that.
