If the scanner is connected to the computer via USB cable, USB cables cannot be much longer than 6-10 feet.

Maximum length of USB cable is 5 meters (about 15 feet) because at the power and data rate that USB runs at, having longer cables causes interference. Even at 15 feet you can have transmission line problems unless you have a very high quality cable. There are USB repeaters that allow you to extend the distance between devices, but you need one every 12 to 15 feet.

There are some high end scanners that have network cards in then so they can be placed anywhere on your network, but they aren't cheap.

The shorter the cord, the better quality.
