Everyone has given good answers - and they are all right - personal taste is the key. I'll tell you my colors and then maybe when you search for your "favs" it will all come together for you.
I'm the type that gyrates to Fall colors - my bedroom is a soft reddish clay. Kinda has a "red" cast to it that screams passion.
My master bath is peach, kinda happy and the way I did it up it feels like a spa.
My kitchen was originally all black and white: floors, counters, cabinets - even the wallpaper! I swapped only the wall color - made it a bright red venetian plaster with a gold glaze mixed into the clear top protective coat.
My living room is a soft/bordering bright green, with a lighter shade on the ceiling (which we did in all the rooms - a lighter shade of the wall color on the ceiling, except for the kitchen. we did that in cream)
My dining room is two shades of tan with cream trim and molding - I didn't want anything to distract from my knock out chandelier and table.
My basement is pale sandy yellow and the ceiling and trim are cream- not a lot of windows in a very large space so I felt it was a good choice.
Kids rooms are done too....lots of colors
You're welcome to take a peek - most all the rooms are posted on my 360 page - except for the dining room, haven't put those in yet.

There are literally thousands of paint colors to choose from. It's a matter of personal preference and decorating style. Generally speaking, soothing, calming colors work well for a bedroom. For me, red or orange or bright yellow would be a bit jarring. My bedroom is painted pale sage green, and my furniture is off-white. It's a very soothing place and good for relaxing and kicking back.
However, I've always thought my off-white furniture would look great with chocolate brown walls, but I'm too chicken to try it. So it really is a matter of preference.
Cheery colors or those in the neutral spectrum seem to work well for kitchens.

Well I love all white with splashes of blue and silver accessories in a bathroom. Also hang frameless mirrors in the bathroom too, it really opens up the space and the colours give a nice crisp, clean, ocean feel.
I love bright colours in all living spaces, like a lemon colour in the hallway because its a busy place. You don't need a relaxing colour in a busy place.
In the dining room, grape and wine colours look amazing as feature walls. Team them with a creamy white colour as well as black a gold accessories. Hang a nice chandiler low over the dining table and you have yourself a pretty romantic setting.
Bedrooms don't always have to be neutral or calming. Splashes of fire engine red look amazing and is pretty saucy for a couple. Just use it sparingly, like behind the bed head or on the window sills. Again, use mirrors, and put some silky sheets on that match your room.
Kids bedrooms look great with candy colours for girls, like fairy floss pink, or pale purple. Use white for trims. Little boys will love Thomas the Tank engine blue and red or even a nice green. As they get older though those nice soft blues will be quite embarrasing.
Lounge rooms are great to mix with. I like using neutral except for one feature wall (my fav is hot pink!!) and then working it all with splashes of the same colour around. Put some white cube book shelves around and DON'T clutter them up. Add travel items, a couple of your fav books, flowers in a coloured vase that matches your feature wall. Put some photos in frames that also match. I love using the long coloured sticks out of a skinny vase. But it all depends on your likes and dislikes, my partner hates pink so I had to use it so it was very subtle. Make sure some of their personality shines through, so add that signed shirt or beer bottle collection somewhere (keep one of a few probably imports and wash them out and put them in the cubed bookshelves.) In the kitchen make it as bright as you can handle. Thats where the action happens. You wont want to cook if its all depressing so colour, colour, colour. I like grape purple and orange together (just not everywhere). Let your imagination go wild!!!!!!!!!

Calm ones for bedrooms, happy ones for living space (although some people like calm colors there as well), Deep tones look good in bathrooms as long as the lighting is sufficient, and with a kitchen you kinda have to match up your cabinets. If they're maple it's going to look silly painted wine. And if they're cherrywood they're going to look silly with light blue. Hope this helps!
