If you are trying to create that 40's/50's retro look, I would try to find some accessories that fit the period - things like a retro TV (they make them with modern parts) that is round, rather than a square box. this woudl be a more 50's style. If you wanted a more 40's look, but still modern, I found a photo I liked at http://www.vrbo.com/31822 - scroll down to the bottom and the last room could really look cool wiht some posters of Marilyn and Audrey. If you want a more rounded style, check out http://www.ddcnyc.com/product.php?id=111502
But you can do your own searching for some photos at either images.yahoo.com, images.google.com or images.dogpile.com. Search for things like glamour bed, retro bedroom or teen bedroom as search terms.
Hope this gives you some ideas - but the other Yamster found a cool site too.

A vanity with a cast iron scroll chair would be nice, maybe a canopy bed. Some drapes that are velvet maybe? Pink and brown go well together; they're modern yet classical somehow. Maybe an old fashioned mirror and large tieback for curtains would be appropriate. Oh yeah, and how about landing a record player in there somewhere?
Another quick touch up is changing out drawer knobs. It's amazing how they can make a piece of furniture look new!

Try using soft pastel colors, soft pinks like traditional pink cotton candy pink. LIght blues, - - woman where typicaly viewed as very femin, soft creatures. -Try looking for some old vinyl records from the good will, casset players and cd players wearnt around. - Big bands and burlesque shows where typical of the era. - Lacey things for the girls and so forth, - Another big help would be to rent or get a few old Black and White movies, with Bob Hope, and Gable, look on the internet for movie actors from 1939 to 1948. - MArilyn Monroe was a actress from the 50's

my daughter loves Marilyn Monroe. For free pics search the internet for Mairlyn Monroe pics. I printed off several. And then framed them in black frames. I used her b&w pics. Looks great. Shop thrift stores for neat items. retro lamps, etc.

your best bet is going to garage sales. people often sell older things that arent in style any more and then u can haggle on the price... try doing a search on the 40/50s on google and they will tell u what was popular...if money is tight try making examples of things like a board from a board game, or price comparison chart, famous people, etc.
good luck!!

For the walls I would paint Stripes... very wide ones Alternating from white and pastel pink/purple...but make sure they have some sparkles on one color like pink. It will make a smaller room look larger and is so easy to do just paint the walls white and when dry add tape to tape off the white stripes and paint the pink/purple...It adds a lot of elegance.

one thing you can do is to go to these flea markets and look ,, they all sorts of stuff... and audrey hepburn is one of my all time favorites...
if your grandparents are still here,, prepare some really good food ,, invite them over ,,, ans ask them to tell you about that era of time.....grandparents just love to talk about this sort of thing,,, because they have lived it.. and it will also make them so proud that their grand child has come to them
good bless
have a nice day

Cool pic here you might be able to save in print and then frame.
Also you can buy posters -- look in your local Goodwill for a poster frame you can find them cheap.
