It is probably a good idea. BUT-not just for athletes.
I believe all students should be able to achieve passing grades, or, we as parents, had better be figuring out why our child/children are not 'getting' it.
If a parent has time to attend the sport games of a student who is EARNING failing grades, then that parent should have the time to work w/ their child.(Yeah- It's a lot more fun to watch a game than help with math...)
However, I would not bank on a high school athlete achieving pro-status. Being in the Spanish club does not mean your student will get a job as an international interpreter.
Like any extra-curricular activity, the parents have to set the rules. The parents have to define priorities-not the child. Then try to help the student to set goals. (Hey-I offered my child two lbs. of M&M's if she would just potty in her potty chair. She hid the chair.) It is not as easy as it sounds.
I will re-iterate and slightly edit my first comment: All children should be able to pass the basics.

Yes, they definitely should!
You are in school to learn, not play sports, that should be a privilege you have to earn by performing in the classroom. It is no good for the kids if they are not learning, but get to play sports, because in reality most of them will never get paid to play sports. It is the job of the school to prepare the children for a "realistic" future, it is not their job to make sure everyone is having fun.
If they can't maintain passing grades, they should be facing disciplinary action just like everyone else, not given a pass because they play a game.
The sooner schools start making learning a priority again, the better, because we cannot afford to have too many more uneducated fools running around this world. We have enough of them already.

I think that high school athletes should have a priority to get passing grades at school, but I do not think that it is necessary to achieve passing grades to join in school sports; especially if the occupation that they are aiming for after finishing school is of athletic ability and not academic. However, I do think that students need to achieve (at least) satisfactory grades to benefit them in everyday life.

Yes, to join and stay active in school sports. Because school is about getting an education, first and foremost. Also, if they can't handle what they already have to do, then they shouldn't add more to the load. This is true of everything in life, not just school, so it's best that they become disciplined in this way of thinking while they are in school.

Yes, because the primary reason for High School is to get a good education, to prepare you for college.
The students that want to be athletes as well should be able to maintain a good GPA, because only a very, very small number of HS athletes make it to the pro's, so they will need a good education to help them get a good job.

Yes they should especially if they intend to go on to college. You will need to show that you are an all round person. You are good as a student, good as an athlete and have extra curricular activities. This means more than someone who has perfect grades but does not join activities outside of this.

They really should because they are representing the school on a team. And if they don't have good grade then it makes there school look bad. But almost every high school does no pass no play rules.

They need good grades because if they do not succeed in sports they need something to fall back on. And besides they an education because they will not be able to survive their whole lives playing sports. Academics should always come first.
