Never heard it called "synonymous" with the Depression. The novel is SET during the aftermath of the Depression and speaks about the hardships imposed on rural working people. That may be the answer you're looking for.
It's also profoundly anti-capitalist, and a magnificent novel by a great novelist.

because the grapes of wrath are found in the book of revelation. Jesus trods the winepress alone and is a symbolic revelation of the anger of God. The depression was indeed a great judgment for many people in america. and many people were religious and knew that God was punishing them. 911 is only a taste of what the great and terrible day ofthe lord will be like. when Gods' fury rages, NO one will remain alive except a very few.
