Here are the questions you need to first answer:
- Will you be paying rent? If so, what type of living accomadations do you require?
- Are you going to be comfortable eating the diet of the average chinese person?
- What will your lifestyle consist of?
Food is cheap, but not that cheap if you go to Western spots like KFC or McDonald's. Transportation is dirt cheap. Taxi rides cost close to nothing (and there are many, many of them).
If you go out to bars or clubs, then I can tell you right now that the bulk of your allotted money will be spent on that (if you drink like me). If you don't plan to drink, then you need to ask yourself what types of activities you will be doing (traveling, reading, etc).
You can expect your average meal at a KFC to cost around 50 RMB. Local Taxi rides can average around 20 RMB (yes, it's that cheap). Bottom line - if you put yourself in a modest living quarter, and do not spend money on drinking, shopping, or some other activity which requires a lot of money, then 10,000 RMB a month should be fine. Also, I think Shenyang will be much more affordable than Beijing.

Ten thousand Rmb is a high salary in China--you can live well! As I'm sure you know, your everyday expenses will be very low (I've lived in China for 3 years and I generally spend about 3,000 a month on average, but I have a cook/housekeeper and get a Chinese massage two or three times a week!) The main question is what is a nice apartment for you. In Shenyang you'll find this won't be an issue (I was there three years ago and a 2 bedroom luxury apartment was about 2,500 rmb) but Beijing can be a little expensive. Here's a good website for rentals in Beijing: http://www.beijingrealestate.com/ (While this site tends to focus on high priced rentals, you can find nice apartments starting at about 4,000 rmb).

Are you kidding me... you can live like a king with that much money. You know most Chinese make about 5000rmb a month in Beijing, and even lower in Shenyang. If I make that much money in China, I will move my entire family to China to live. What job is this? Can I get one too?

Sure, comfortable life is OK but not luxurious. Beijing is a high consumption city in China, You could spend 2 or 3 thousand RMB on apartment rent and the rest for life enjoyment. Food is not expensive in Beijing.

Being may be the capital of China and also its political, economic, and national center and you have the chance to see it now, look with hotelbye . Beijing is one of the very visited cities in the world. Annually, an incredible number of visitors arrive at Beijing to see the fantastic blend of previous and new. Beijing is just a town for all seasons. You are able to generally discover anything for you no matter what time you're in Beijing and whatsoever your passions are. It does take time to enjoy exactly what Beijing City has to offer but absolutely you cannot eliminate the opportunity to see Tiananmen Square. Situated in the center of Beijing, Tiananmen Square is the website for enormous parades and rallies and the biggest square of this sort in the world.

That is enough for above average living in either.
Of course, like in all situations, it depends on your definition of "comfortably".
If you want to stay in a penthouse, eat out every night and go party in the clubs all the time. NO, it won't be.
If you just want to rent a decent 2 bedroom flat, dine out once or twice per week etc. You will be more than fine.

If you live in a normal lifestyle as in renting a 2 bedroom apartment and eating out once awhile, then it is more than enough.
