The most straightforward instructions are at http://howtobrew.com The name says it all. If you have a home brewing store near where you are, you can get as much or as little as you need to get started. If you don't, my favorite supplier is http://morebeer.com though there are hundreds out there around the world.

As people have already said, read up on how to brew beer, and buy the equipment. Ive been brewing for about 3 years now, and will admit that when I first started my beer wasnt anything great, but it was a lot better than many domestics on the market. Now though I can safely say that what I produce is very good. Ive learned the process and know what the heck I am doing. For the last year, I also have started formulating my own recipes based on readings. Its something that takes a bit of practice before you get going. Just because I have a recipe doesnt mean you will get the same results, its like cooking or baking. In brewing, cooking or baking you give 20 different people the same recipe, and you will get 20 different tasting products.

I brewed several batches of mead (honey wine) and the process was relatively simple. Cook the batch, cool it, add yeast, bottle and let age. Economically, brewing your own beer/wine/mead/etc probably doesn't make a whole lot of sense since you end up spending more on the raw ingredients than it would cost to just buy your brew of choice. And with beer you will need a bit in the way of equipment do it it right. There are kits that you can buy over the internet that will provide you with all the gear, ingredients and recipes that can get you started without a huge financial investment so you can see if this is something that you want to do. Most people that I know who brew do it because they enjoy it. For them, it's a hobby and they enjoy fiddling with recipes. Home brewers, once they know what they are doing, can make beer of excellent quality and it can be fun.

There are lots of good recipes out there, but it really depends what your taste in beer is. Do you like a pale ale, lager or stout? Or do you really like an ale that is no longer brewed or would like to try a beer brewed from some ancient recipe using unusual ingredients? Either way, if you brew it yourself you have complete freedom to brew your own perfect beer. You won't brew it first time but you have to keep trying, tasting and learning. This is all part of the fun of the most fantastic hobby.

its all trial and error if you want to make your own flavour, palletable drink.
I've brewed a fair few now and its best to start with a kit, then onve you've got the hang of what your doing try from scratch - then you can add or remove things, different sugars, different hops, bottled water, tap water etc etc etc.
Its dead easy to do though - word of advice, steralise everything, baby bottle stuff is ideal.
If you want to do cider or anything that needs pressing, you can even hire presses from most shops and even the HSS Hire shop has them.
