Biodiesel, but not the kind you make in your garage. The best biodiesel is made in refineries using conventional processing technologies. This material is suitable for use in conventional diesel engines and can make up 100% of the fuel charge.

Ethanol can only be used up to 10% in conventional gasoline engines.

Solar will never be practical for transportation use and hydrogen, while possible, would require a complete redesign not only of the vehicles but also of the fuel delivery infastructure.

At the moment the best gas saving vehicle is the hybrid, which does hardly anything unless you drive just the right way. Hydrogen is probably the biggest thing, that uses no oil gas whatsoever. I am not sure how much hydrogen to the mile those cars can get.. Another vehicle is that new chevy volt, which uses only electricity, athough it can only go 40 miles on one full charge.
Something you might be interested in though is that currently there is a challenge for the gas saving cars. The first person who can make a car that get over 100 miles to the gallon and gets it into production for the public to buy gets 2.5 millions dollars.

Bio diesel.

You can use it now, without any modifications to your (diesel) engine. And it's not only readily available, restaurants all over the planet are dying for a way to get rid of it!

Electricity generated from hydroelectric, wind or solar. Ethanol is no better than petroleum seeing it requires energy to grow and process.
