Mayonnaise has been in useas a sauce base by french chefs since the 1700s; Miracle whip was introduced as a salad dressing at the Chicago world's fair in 1933. As far as composition, Mayonnaise and Miracle Whip contain essentially the same ingredients, just not in the same proportion. The actual recipie for miracle whip is a closely guarded secret, but most think it gets its "tangy zip" from having a higher proportional content of vinegar than what is found in mayo.

There isn't really a difference. However, Miracle Whip seems to feel the need to state that their product is REAL mayo on the jar. I wonder where that fake mayo is...

From a cholesterol point of view, Miracle Whip is better health wise. From a personal point of view, Mayonnaise is better, I like to taste what I am eating not just the spread. Mayonnaise is more versatile as far as cooking with. One is sweet and tangy; one is rich and almost buttery tasting (I make my own mayo fresh). I suggest you do a taste comparison yourself and then check the ingredients and see which one you would like best.
