I have a "Seagate" external hard drive that I use to back-up my songs as I have a lot of them and a ton of them have been bought from the iTunes Store. I have also authorized 3 computers to play my music, and whenever I use my external hard drive to move and copy my music from one Library to another, a lot of times I get all of these black exclamation points by songs -- which are songs that I copied previously -- and when I go to click on those songs, I get a message that says: "The song '_______' could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it?" What I have been having to do is actually copy each of my libraries that I copy into my iTunes Library onto my desktop and when this happens, then I have to recopy the songs back into my Library and go through and delete the ones with the exclamation points. This is very frustrating, not to mention time- consuming. I have no idea why this is happening. Does anyone know what's going on???

iTunes only knows about the directory it last played the song from. If you moved it, iTunes doesn't stay informed.

Simply "Add folder to library" from the file menu to your backup drive. Make sure in preferences you do NOT select "copy to itunes folder when adding to library" or else you will have duplicate files and entries.

Select ONE place to store your music and point itunes there.

Before moving your iTunes library you need to tell iTunes where you are moving them to. That's why you iTunes can't find the original files.
