Ooh, this is one I'd like to know myself! The only way to link this to religion though might be the spiritual experience one might have when viewing such a splendid sight as the microstructure of crystals! I'd check with a university chemistry or physics department , specifically the group that does X-ray crystallography. It is likely that one or more of them might have taken up this related hobby. Also, there are pictorial features in some science magazines that often have beautiful and colorful microphotos of different types of crystals. It might be possible for you to contact the photographers and get information on how they got up to speed.

You might check with a school that offers Graphics Art program if you interested in the digital photography aspect of it.
If you are interested in gemstones for their properties associated with crystal healing, you might just ask someone who deals with crystals and stones. You could also research it online. Just google in "Crystals and Stones," and you'll find lots of information. Maybe this is why your question is in this category...?
