I basically plan on using a tattoo artist to draw out my idea. I probably will not have him/her do the actual work, but I need a good hand to sketch. How much do you tip someone for that?

hi, this might actually depend on the actual shop's policy where the artist works. like the shop i work in, for example. we draw up artwork for free, however, we do not allow it to leave the shop. if you want it, you have to get it tattooed there. otherwise we would be drawing up stuff and people could just be getting it tattooed at another shop, ya heard? a lot of times when i draw stuff up for people and they just want the artwork and don't want to get it tattooed, i'll let them buy it off me, that way i'm not breaking shop policy because technically they'd be paying for it so they wouldn't be walking away with a drawing i did for free. anyway i let them give me whatever they want. they usually give me around $20. i have to be honest with you, i don't really think they realize how much time and effort i put into my artwork. it's definately worth more than $20 but i don't put a price on my work, i just let people pay what they want to pay for it. as far as drawings go i mean. it might be good to find out how much they would charge to do the tattoo and then give them perhaps 15-20% of that total tattoo price for just the artwork itself. but maybe this shop is different and actually will have set prices to sell artwork. maybe you should ask this artist and see what their particular policy is, it would be easier to find out what to tip from there. good luck.

It depends on the detail of the sketch but generally if it were a tatoo the artist would normally charge 50 dollars for, you should probably tip about 10. If it is a 300 dollar tat, you should tip about 25.

I was looking through a magazine at a shop last week and saw an ad for "practice skin" that is supposed to be the closest thing to tattooing a person without giving someone a crappy tattoo. If you are serious about learning, this might be a good way to go. I don't know anything about giving tattoos, only getting them, but it looked like it would be a good product and you get to practice with a gun and get used to the weight of it.

yea, your getting a custom drawn art work on you. they are doing you a service, the least you can do is tip them. rule of thumb i heard was 15-20%. Plus if you plan to get more then you get a discount .
