Is this a nice place to live for a wife who's husband will be deployed for most of the year?

I am from Northern VA/DC and I love the city, and I love the country side, I would love to know how others feel about the different places.

I have been at Lejeune for 4 1/2 years now. Personally, I don't mind it, it's within a decent distance of both my and my husbands families. If you like the city, it may not be the place for you. The closest "city" is Wilmington and that's about 45 minutes away. It's a college town, has a nice historic waterfront district, has anything that Jacksonville(Lejeune) doesn't. If you want BIG city Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill is about a 4 hour drive. If you're established where you are job/school/whatever, you and your husband may want to discuss you staying put until he gets back. There aren't a lot of decent paying jobs available in the area and a year is a very long and possibly very lonely time. I have no oppinion on Cali because I've never been there. Hope this gives you some insight.

If you want a lot of things to do then Pendleton would be better. San Diego and Mexico is right there, Orange County is just as close, and LA is 45 minutes away. Vegas and Phoenix are a 4-5 hour drive away and you always can drive up to Northern CA to the SF Bay Area. If you like mild, sunny weather with very little rain and the nicest beaches in the continental US, So Cal has it!

Both are OK. North Carolina will have considerably more rainfall than Pendleton though. Lejuene is also located in a more rural and less populated area then Pendleton. Being from VA I bet Lejuene would be pretty comfortable for you.

I'm in 29 Palms and just went down to Pendleton last Friday for a memorial service. The base had a lot more than whats on this base. I hear that Lejeune is pretty "trashy" but I've never been... I like to see different areas of the country, so I enjoy being away from the east coast (i'm from OH)... If you wanna chat, e-mail me from the link in my profile!

I was stationed at both, and both had their pros and cons. Overall, I preferred Lejuene, but I am from a small town, and preferred the area there. Pendleton was nice, and yes, San Diego is a neat place. But, southern Cali was too busy for me. Everything moved too fast out there.

Depends on what you like to do.

Marines train for combat at every base where they are stationed. Boot camp is preparation for service in the Marine Corps and part of serving in the Marine Corps is training for war. He enlisted in the Marines. What did your family think he was gonna do? Go camping? His chances of going to the "front lines" depend entirely on his MOS. He may do a combat tour or he might never leave the country. Hope that answers that particular question. I'm sorry to hear that your family is upset; perhaps it will help them to know that your brother is serving the United States, not a president. He is serving for the ideals on which America was built, namely, FREEDOM. I'd bet that your brother does not know President Obama personally, so he's not going off to fight for him. If he finds himself in combat, your brother will be fighting for our country on a grand scale and on a more immediate level, your brother will be fighting for the Marines to his left and right. Be proud of him, honor and support him, thank him and try not to worry. He'll be surrounded by other Marines who are highly trained (whether they served at Pendleton or not) and they'll all watch each other's backs. Tell your folks he's in good hands.

Are you an east coast person or a west coast person? Personally, I would take Pendleton. San Diego is a great town! And the weather is unbeatable. Pretty similar year round.

Go to J-Ville.. the town sucks... full of marines... you can never get a parking spot in Wal-Mart.. but if my husband were deployed I know I'd want to be closer to home.
