I have flown both and to me they are about the same. My preference has always been United since I read that when Boeing was introducing the 727, American wanted an aircraft with 2 engines because of the cost savings while United wanted 4 engines because they were concerned about safety. Ultimately everyone was able to compromise and the 727 came out with 3 engines. From then on, I have always perceived United as being a more safety conscious airline and perceive American being more of a cost conscious airline.

Neither.
If you have an option, Southwest, JetBlue or any foreign carrier will provide a much better service.

UAL and AA have fired so many good people in the recent past, that the ones that still work are overloaded, tired and don't really care.

If you check all the international awards that airlines received for good customer, ground or in-flight service you will notice that AA and UAL never made the list.

United emerged out of three plus years of Chapter 11 bankruptcy during February 2006. They have also cancelled their pension fund which ended up slashing retirement benefits. American has managed to avoid the bankruptcy method of cost cutting. I would imagine that American is in a better position to offer well maintained airplanes and happier employees.

United does have some nice legroom in their Economy Plus section but other seats can be tight. American has decent legroom and less of a tight seat section. If in doubt, you can check out aircraft layouts, by brand, in the included link.

United, for their Economy Plus seating. Much more legroom.

I rarely fly AA any more. The service has deteriorated so much in the past 3 years that it's a bad joke. They won't even throw you a bag of peanuts any more on shorter flights. They used to be my carrier of choice, but not any more.

When you get right down to it they are all nothing but greyhound buses with wings. and depending on the attitude of their employee's on any given day is how you will end up judging the overall company.
