Well in singular panties would b pantie n bra would b bras in plural, i guess.

The only reason that bra is singular and panties is plural is because of the lack of an S at the end of bra. It really can be argued that panties could be singular. The english rule tells us that it isn't. There is really no logical reason except for that is the rule.

That's a really perplexing question.
My guess is that panties came from pants, which is plural to refer to the 2 legs. But bra is singular because it developed as an alternative to a corset, which is singular.

Grapefruit is also already in plural form. Legs are the plural form of leg. Somethings are just different in plurality by way of verbage.
BrassiereS? That would make for two of one, which holds two.

because it is a dimunutive form of Pants, which refers to a bifucated garment (ie 2 legs ) and then is pluralized,
my grandma always called hers a braas (as in a shortened form of brassiere) guess she thought it needed an "S" as well!
