the 1080p is supposed to be better because the whole picture is done at once, but the 1080i(interlaced) only every other horizontal line on the set is done at once(30fps) where the 1080p(progressive) operates at a full 60fps, but other than that it is the same resolution picture

The i and p stand for interlaced and progressive. Progressive is always better than interlaced signals. Therefore, 1080p would produce the better signal.
Take note that all HDTV's support 1080i signals, but only some HDTV's support 1080p. Actually, most HDTV's don't support 1080p. 1080p has only been popular in the last 4 months, since the release of BluRay, HD-DVD, PS3 and Xbox 360. Currently, there is no such thing as a 1080p TV broadcast.

1080p.
1080 intelaced is primarily used for CRT based TV's. Typically the resolution of an 1080i set is about 800 horizontal lines.
1080 progressive is full HD with 1920 horizontal lines.
720 progressive is HD with 1280 horizontal lines.
The 1080 refers to the number of vertical lines the TV displays.
Over the air broadcast HDTV is typcally 1920 X 1080p or 1280 X 720p. The Tonight Show is broadcast every night at 1920 X 1080p. Analog TV is typcally converted to 1080i on high resolution sets.

1080P will provide you the best picture, however it is only currently available off an HD DVD. NO Television transmission signal is currently doing 1080p, as it increases the demand on bandwidth so they transmit either 720p or 1080i.

Neither and BOTH.....
1080i and 1080P are >>BOTH<< 1080 lines of resolution!
That's the KEY!
NOW.....the big box stores WANT TO SELL 1080P....because it's expensive and more profit.
But they were selling 1080i for the last 3-4 years BEFORE 1080P came out....AND they looked GREAT!!
But they relegated the 1080i TVs to the LOW DEF signal lines in the store so you won't SEE the fact that they are the SAME PICTURE QUALITY!
And 1080P gets the BEST Hi DEF signal in the Store!
Ask them to hook up the HD signal to the 1080i TVS....THEY WON'T because you'll see the truth of it all....

Since it updates all 1080 lines every frame (60 fps) the 1080p should provide a better picture for a moving image. If the image is static then the resoultion of the two would be the same.

1080p...The p stands for progressive, same as a progressive scan DVD player. "i" stands for interlaced. The difference is that interlaced signals flash one half of the picture on the screen and the other half 1/60th of a second later, while progressive scan video flashes all of the image at the same time. This makes progressive, or "p" have a better picture quality

even though 1080p is the best resolution, its really difficult for the average consumer to tell the difference between the two anyways
