How does being self-righteous makes us feel safer?

It doesn't - the only "safety" is in the righteousness of Christ.

I don't know...I find myself copping a self-righteous attitude quite often. I want to be good and do the right thing but I'm imperfect like everyone else. I get off on tangents about someone that does something horrible or way worse than anything I've done. I think I'm really just trying to "teach" others to do better or good when I sound self-righteous. I want goodness in the world. I don't have evil intentions, although I make mistakes and do the wrong thing sometimes. I still love GOOD and not EVIL. Some people are just the opposite. Yeah, people want to protect their own hide...but making things up and lying about yourself to purposefully make others feel bad or beneath you is pure EVIL. Most of us have good intentions when we're coming off as self-righteous, I hope. I'm always self-analyzing to keep myself in check. I don't want to be a falsehood to myself, either. I second guess myself as much or more than I do others.

when i think of self rightousness i think of christians who havet o preach god all the time and shove religion onto people. I guess it makes them feel better to think they have all this power. That they ca n*save* people makes them feel powerful.

It gives us the opportunity to look at others and pat ourselves on the back that we aren't in the pit that they are in. We get to breathe that sigh of relief that we are "doing things right".....unlike them. I struggle daily with this.
